“Every time we mention God we become theologians, and the only question is whether we are going to be good ones or bad ones.” —J. I. Packer
A theology, divinity, or ministry degree can be an excellent start to a career—and not just for pastors and theologians.
Maybe you feel called to be a Bible teacher or a youth minister. Perhaps you desire to become a chaplain, or you’re preparing for the mission field. Maybe you want to be a music director, a nonprofit administrator, or a writer. Or maybe you simply want to sort out your own understanding of who God is.
There are many reasons to pursue a theology degree, and many degree options to choose from. Students compare theology programs based on content, reputation, and price. But there’s another factor that shouldn’t be overlooked: location.
Reasons to Study Theology Close to Home
Due to the separation of church and state, most theology programs are offered by private schools. Since tuition rates for private schools are identical for in-state and out-of-state students, it’s easy to assume location is less significant for theology students. But that’s not entirely true.
Some benefits of studying close to home are obvious, such as staying in contact with friends and family, and saving on travel and living expenses. But there is another factor theology students should consider: networking.
Overall, theology is a people-oriented field. Different cultures and contexts lead to different ministries. Just think how different a small country church in Ashippun, Wisconsin, is from a megachurch in Boston, Massachusetts. Often, students are best equipped to serve in the culture they’re most familiar with.
Attending a nearby school enables students to intern, volunteer, and network in the same area they intend to work after graduation. Being able to build lasting face-to-face relationships in an area has long-term benefits, both personally and professionally.
Find Theology Degrees Near You
If you’re considering in-state theology, divinity, or ministry programs, check out Degree Prospects’ comprehensive program lists covering each state to help you in your search! Simply click on your state in the list at the end of this page, and you’ll be directed to more information on nearby theology programs.
Our website covers every kind of theology program: associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, PhDs, certificates (undergrad and graduate), and specialty programs (Master of Divinity, Doctor of Ministry, etc.). Each guide walks through what students can expect from that type of program—and how it may fit their career goals.
We also have information about different formats. For instance, if your state doesn’t have a theology program that’s a good fit for you, and you don’t want to move out of state, we have guides for online theology degrees. Online degrees are common (and accessible) at each level of theology education.
