A bachelor’s degree in theology is a four-year undergraduate program, addressing questions such as
- Is Jesus God?
- How should we interpret the Bible?
- What has the Christian church believed historically?
- What are Christian ethics?
- How do different religions view God?
Through a bachelor’s in theology, students become equipped with a wealth of knowledge about God, Scripture, and what it means to live a life of faith.
This guide outlines the variety of theology-related bachelor’s degrees, shows the nuts-and-bolts of earning one, and closes with a directory of degree programs to consider.
What Are Bachelor’s in Theology Degree Programs?
Bachelor’s in theology degrees are often offered through Christian schools—and even secular theology degrees (such as Oxford’s) tend to put an emphasis on Christian theology.
A theological education equips Christian leaders to preach, teach, and respond to others’ questions. However, different types of theology-related degrees emphasize other subjects in addition to theology. Some emphasize preaching, teaching, and leadership; others prioritize biblical studies. And still others emphasize cultural impact or ethics and philosophy. Below is a sample comparison of several theology-related degrees.
Types of Theology Degree Programs
- Theology: A standard bachelor’s degree in theology focuses on the academic side of belief. For instance, what is the Trinity? How is Jesus fully God and fully man? Christian teachers and leaders are expected to answer questions like these, which a theology degree equips graduates to do.
- Biblical Studies: Like theology, biblical studies is academically focused. Both degrees teach the study of Christian belief, but they approach that study from different angles. While theology is organized by topic (e.g., the doctrine of the Trinity, the doctrine of salvation), biblical studies is organized by book (e.g., Isaiah, Acts). Biblical studies programs teach students how to read Scripture in light of its original language, culture, and the context of biblical literature.
- Christian Education: Where theology and biblical studies are focused on building knowledge, Christian education is focused on the next step—sharing that knowledge. Leadership, communication, and teaching methods are some of the practical skills honed by a Christian education degree.
- Christian Ministry: Christian ministry has a great deal of overlap with Christian education, but is less limited to formal education for established Christians. For instance, evangelism plays a larger role in Christian ministry, and less formal one-on-one education (such as mentoring) is also emphasized.
- Worship Arts: A worship arts degree develops musical talent while also strengthening students’ theological framework and ministry skills. It’s an excellent way to develop as a musician without neglecting the message behind the music.
- Apologetics: How reliably was the Bible transcribed? Does archaeology match the Bible’s claims? Is there evidence that Jesus rose from the dead? A bachelor’s degree in apologetics—that is, a defense of the faith—often overlaps with theology or biblical studies degrees, but places a particular emphasis on responding to skeptics’ critical questions.
- Philosophy: In comparison to theology, a philosophy degree drifts even further into the big picture of belief. What is the nature of humanity? Do humans have free will? How do we define good and evil? Despite its big, abstract questions, philosophy is built on logic, critical thinking, and ethics—practical skills that can be applied to faith and life.
- Religious Studies: Most theology-related degrees focus on the Christian faith, taught by Christian institutions, with the goal of advancing the Christian faith. A religious studies degree, however, is less focused on one’s own faith and more on how each of the major faiths have shaped history, politics, culture, and art.
- Biblical Archaeology: The Bible records many historical, cultural, and even geographical details. Biblical archaeology helps students understand and appreciate Scripture through these original contexts.
- Church History: Numerous theological doctrines (and heresies) have been refined over years of debate within the church. Many historical events shaped—and were shaped by—the Christian church. Through a bachelor’s degree in church history, students can better grasp the origins of denominational differences and learn from the failures and triumphs of Christianity’s past.
Theology Degree Program Overview
Bachelor’s degrees take time, effort, and money. This section explores the nuts and bolts of what it takes to earn a bachelor’s degree in theology.
Program Structure and Length
Bachelor’s degrees are designed to be completed over four years, typically requiring 120 credits. Of these credits, about half are general education credits.
General education courses include English, math, science, social studies, and other subjects not specific to one’s major. Typically, a student’s first two years of study prioritize these general education credits. This way, students can easily pivot if they choose to change their degree partway through their schooling. This also lets students hone their study skills before their major studies begin in earnest.
During their first two years, students will still complete some low-level major core classes, serving as building blocks for higher level courses. For theology students, these classes might include an overview of the Old and New Testaments (in preparation for taking courses in Hebrew and Greek).
By their third and fourth years, students will be taking upper-level major courses, such as Systematic Theology and Greek II.
Students often take electives during their last two years as well. Electives are a selection of classes students can choose from to meet degree requirements. Some common theology electives include classes in philosophy, ministry, and biblical studies.
Curriculum and Coursework
Common theology classes include
- Biblical Studies
- Systematic Theology
- Church History
- Christian Ethics
Most theology degrees touch on a combination of theology, biblical studies, and Christian life and ministry. For instance, Bethel University, Wheaton College, and the Talbot School of Theology offer bachelor’s degrees balancing each of these points. However, other degrees specialize in one or two above the others. For instance, Spring Hill College’s bachelor’s degree in theology emphasizes theological history and philosophy.
Admission Requirements
The admission process for a bachelor’s degree in theology follows the usual—applying to the college or university, then choosing a major. Private Christian schools may require affirmation of the school’s statement of faith and/or a written essay on one’s faith as part of the application process.
How Much Do Theology Degree Programs Cost?
When determining cost, public versus private has a large impact on the sticker price. While many public colleges offer a degree in religious studies (e.g., Texas State and the University of Chicago), a far greater variety of theology degrees are available through private colleges.
In order to cut down costs for private collage, students must be proactive in pursuing merit and need-based scholarships. Some of the most affordable private schools for theology include Moody Bible Institute, Regent University, and Calvary University.
What Can You Do with a Theology Bachelor’s Degree?
A bachelor’s in theology has a wide range of applications. Some common positions for graduates include
- Youth minister
- Educator
- Worship coordinator
- Parachurch ministry worker
- Writer
- Journalist
- Missionary
None of these positions require additional degrees.
Many of these jobs can also be filled by someone with a two-year associate degree in theology. However, a bachelor’s degree will have the competitive edge, and in some Protestant denominations, it can qualify someone as an associate pastor. Becoming a chaplain also requires a bachelor’s degree.
Catholic priests, Orthodox priests, and many Protestant denominations require both a bachelor’s degree and seminary education to become ordained. Anyone who is considering ordination has additional reason to pursue a bachelor’s degree over an associate’s.
Many professions prefer a bachelor’s degree but don’t require it to be in a specific field. In such cases, a bachelor’s in theology is an excellent choice for someone who wants to understand their faith better (and perhaps volunteer in ministry).
